Course co-directors: Marija Mandić, University of Belgrade, and Olesia Marković, Kyiv- Mohyla Academy

The southeastern peninsula of the European continent, more commonly known under the loaded term Balkans, is a region of astonishing ethnic, linguistic, and religious diversity, where some of the greatest empires and political blocs have bordered each other. The first module of this course will focus on the post-Cold War period of the Balkan countries with a special focus on the breakup of Yugoslavia and its consequences, on the one hand, and on the Balkan countries such as Bulgaria, Romania, and Albania that belonged to the Eastern Bloc and their practices of overcoming their totalitarian past, on the other. The second module will be dedicated to the development of the Balkan states and their path towards EU integration. The canvas of the course will offer reflections and thoughts relevant to Ukraine’s public memoryscape, future post-war development, and EU integration.

This course is also open to students from the Balkan region. Those students should submit their application packages via the form.
