Research Methods for the Social Sciences

Course co-directors: Levente Littvay, CEU Democracy Institute, and Inna Melnykovska, CEU

This course offers a comprehensive introduction to both qualitative and quantitative research methodologies. Designed for undergraduate and graduate students affected by the war in Ukraine, the course provides hands-on training to develop essential research skills through the examination of Ukrainian social and historical realities.

The curriculum begins with foundational sessions, such as an introduction to survey research in Ukraine, exploring Ukrainian identity, and the ethical considerations of war testimonies. Students will engage with a variety of methods, including auto-ethnography, systematic literature reviews (using Maxqda), qualitative interviewing, focus groups, and participatory visual methods. Through workshops and practical exercises, students will explore advanced topics like network analysis, causal inference, and process tracing, acquiring the tools necessary for conducting rigorous social science research. Each session encourages active participation, fostering a collaborative learning environment through mentorship sessions.
