Facing the Legacy of the Yugoslav Wars

Course co-directors: Vladimir Petrovic (NIOD Institute for War, Holocaust and Genocide Studies, Amsterdam) and Milos Hrnjaz (University of Belgrade)

The course rests on a UNDP-sponsored project, “Overcoming points of contention: transgenerational coping with the legacy of the Yugoslav armed conflicts of the 1990s.” It addresses the themes from recent history in the Western Balkans, which are proverbially difficult to talk about. The politically charged topic of the legacy of war is coupled with problems of insufficient information, the ability to process them critically, and to open a responsible dialogue about the armed conflicts of the 90s and their consequences. The project also addresses the problem of the reduced number of regional initiatives, joint activitie,s and insufficiently represented transgenerational approach to understanding the crimes committed during the conflict in the 1990s on the territory of the former Yugoslavia.
